Elizabeth City is at the Narrows of the Pasquotank River, approximately 12 nautical miles from Albemarle Sound. The Dismal Swamp Canal connects the Elizabeth River in Virginia and the Pasquotank River. The canal was dug in 1790, and by the early 1800s a vigorous trade with the West Indies had been established. Historic buildings from the era include Christ Episcopal Church, 200 S. McMorrine St., and the Old Brick House, north of downtown on the Pasquotank River, also known as the Blackbeard House because of its associations with the infamous pirate. Learn More...
